A Career in Teaching: ACP (Alternate Certification Program)

Amy Anders, ACP Program Director; House Principal
Atascocita High School, Humble, Texas

How are you are using the edWeb?

Mostly for the ACP (Alternate Certification Program), but I am also a house principal at Atascocita High School, and I'm going to use it with my teacher groups this year.

Can you tell me more about your ACP program?

It's a private ACP program that is licensed by the state of Texas. It's actually called an Educator Preparation Program (EPP), but most people are more familiar with term ACP. Applicants must have a 4-yr degree and an acceptable GPA to apply for the program to become a teacher.

How did you decide to use the edWeb?

I was thinking of using Skype, but the edWeb is so much easier because you can participate when you are able to.

How are you using the edWeb for your ACP program?

I wanted something where we could have online discussions and it's been really great.

We have a combination of face-to-face and online programs. The edWeb is the whole foundation for our online program.

So far it's been really, really cool.

We are using it to train our first year teachers. They are learning from each other. Online communication is more collaborative. It really helps for them to see each other's comments.

One great advantage is that our first-year teachers can come in and join the discussion at any point in time. They can review all the previous discussion. It's all there for them. They don't have to wait for another class to start.

The more I use the edWeb, the better it gets. I plan on using it in a lot more ways-the survey and quizzes, the wiki, the weblinks.

I'm also a house principal at Atascocita High School, so I'm living the issues teachers need to deal with every day. Because of that perspective, I like it to be more collaborative. The edWeb helps me do that. I look forward to using edWeb more...it is a great collaborative tool.
